Puckhog Pools

Puckhog Pools works on the principle that all pool users have a unique login and password. Currently, the only way to participate in a pool, is to have a valid e-mail address which is used for the pool login. I Do Not use or distribute these e-mail these e-mail addresses. It is simply a good way of enforcing unique user names within a multi-user system such as this, it also means there's one less thing for you to remember and passwords can be e-mailed if forgotten.

Pool administrators can manually add as many users (teams) as needed. For administrators who conduct drafts, all teams can be manually entered and then can be passed off to other people (users) after the pool is set up. Once logged in, you can change your password, pool display name and e-mail address for logging in.

Scoring & Points

Scoring for Puckhogpools is currently hard-coded within the system. All skaters accumulate points as in the leaque with 1 point for a goal and 1 point for an assist. You have the option of including goalies in your pool. Goalies receive 1 point for every win and 1 additional point for a shutout. Puckhog pools carries many other player statistics but because they are not paid for, the points are based on the most reliable and easily obtained stats. The savings are passed directly to you, the user ... ie. it's free.

History

PuckHog Pools was started in 2001 out of necessity. The group I had been participating in pools with for many years had slowly become scattered around the country and it was becoming difficult to keep pools going. I was also too cheap to pay someone to keep stats for us. The typical rate at the time was about $20 per pool and with 8 - 10 participants , this was cutting into the pool winnings ... Hence, Puckhogpools.com was born.

Technical Details

Puckhog Pools was an ideal canidate for a Linux System and Open Source software. The backbone of the system is the MySQL relational database which stores all pool, user and player data. The front-end for the system is all done using PHP and is running on an Apache server. The statistics are automatically retreived from various web sources and loaded into the statistics database using Perl scripting. Scheduled Perl scripting is also used to calculate all of the Pool Totals.
